Farewell: Retiree Pamela Powell passes after bout with pneumonia

Pamela Powell

Pamela Powell, a Southwest employee for 34 years, passed away on the evening of Sept. 27, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in Germantown, Tennessee. Her life was cut short due to double pneumonia.

Born Pamela Carol Mason June 23, 1953 in Memphis, Pam was the middle daughter born to Everette “Dooley” Mason and Dorothy “Carolyn” Mason. She graduated from State Technical Institute in 1998 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Studies.

Powell began her career as the coordinator of student activities in the Student Services Department at former State Technical Institute at Memphis before its consolidation with Shelby State Community College. Passionate about helping students achieve their academic degrees and certifications, Powell worked with students from across the college, as well as faculty and staff, and was a liaison to student organizations. From registration to conducting orientations, she never met a stranger. Powell retired from Southwest July 1, 2007.

Colleagues describe Powell as one who lived life to the fullest. She had an effervescent personality and a smile that could light up a room, Wanda Coopwood said. Pamela was always upbeat and could easily develop friendships. She touched many lives while she was here.

Powell leaves behind her loving husband of 46 years (Randy), her only daughter Robin Tosso (Aaron), 2 grandchildren, Bailey and Noah Tosso, and her 2 sisters, Linda Sherrill (Ronnie) and Dorothy Sanders (Donnie).

Please join us in offering condolences to the family of Pamela Powell, a much beloved and dedicated Southwest colleague. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to:
