RETIREMENT: Barbara Wells, registrar
Southwest Registrar Barbara Wells is registering for retirement! After 44 years of dedicated service to the college, Wells will be trading in student class schedules for a more flexible schedule of her own effective Dec. 21, 2018. Prior to becoming registrar, Wells served as the director of records.
“Today I feel happy and a little sad, but I mostly feel great because I know that everything will be in good hands. I will miss the people and the students, many of whom I feel I’ve raised,” remarked Wells at her retirement reception Dec. 18 at the Macon Cove Campus Bornblum Library Art Gallery where colleagues and well-wishers joined Wells in a celebration of her long-standing service at Southwest. As the primary gatekeeper for students' records, registration requests, and class scheduling, Wells held a daunting position managing student records for the second largest student body in Memphis. A poster was presented to Wells indicating her span of work: “Over 16,000 days, hundreds of problems solved, countless projects, lots of meetings, unforgettable friendships, everlasting memories and one happy retiree.”
Associate Registrar Katrina Muldrow has known Wells since 2000. “Barbara hired me as a student worker and throughout the years, she has been my mentor, coach and a life-long friend,” Muldrow said. “She was always willing to share her wealth of knowledge and I could always rely on her unselfish help. We will miss her greatly.”
Wells plans to travel, get a dog and catch up on her reading. “I have quite a few books to catch up on. I told Mr. Cockrill (Southwest English Professor Thad Cockrill) that I purchased two chairs; one to sit and watch my cooking shows, and another to look out through my bedroom window at a field of cotton in the summertime while I read.”
