Saluqi women’s soccer team kicks off promising season

Southwest’s 2019 Saluqi Women’s Soccer Team

Southwest women's soccer team kicked off its 2019 season with a 4-1 start (2-1 in conference play) with wins over Meridian (3-1), Itawamba (7-5), Dyersburg State (6-1) and Columbia State (3-1) while losing to Motlow State (2-0). The team finished conference runner-up last season.

"The start of the season is going well," Head Coach Brandon VanCleave said. "We're beginning to figure out who we are and the team chemistry has been very good. There are still a few things we need to work on, but I'm happy with what I've been seeing in practice and in the games."

Sophomore Anna Trotter, an All-TCCAA selection last year as a freshman, leads the team with four goals, including two in the season opening win over Meridian. Other top scorers are freshman Emma Duke (3 goals, 2 assists), sophomore Thaina dePaula, who was also an All-TCCAA pick last year (3 goals, 1 assist), sophomore Juliane Alcantara (3 goals), freshman Macarena Gonzalez (2 goals, 7 assists) and freshman Kallen Gresko (2 goals, 4 assists).

Congratulations, Lady Saluqis, on your well-deserved wins!
