New Student's Checklist

This checklist is designed to assist new students in the admission and registration process. If you have questions about any of the requirements, please contact Admissions and Records at 901-333-5924.

Complete/Submit Online Application: You may apply to Southwest by completing our online application.
Application Fee: Pay your $10 application fee to the Cashier's Office at any of Southwest's locations or mail a check/money order to:

Request Records: Request an "Official" copy of your high school/GED (General Educational Development) scores, college transcript(s), be sent to:

Vaccination Forms: Submit proof of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella [Chickenpox] and Hepatitis vaccines.

Financial Aid: Apply for financial aid (if applicable):
  • Federal Pell Grants are available as well as scholarships.
  • To determine if there is need for assistance; Southwest uses the "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (available online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/), which takes into consideration the factors that affect a family’s financial status.
    • Southwest Tennessee Community College School Code is 010439.

Testing Requirements:

Note: The COMPASS™ test is administered continuously throughout the semester. Make plans to test at your convenience to avoid the rush at registration.

New Student Advising: New Student Advising is required for all new, degree seeking students.
  • Register for a New Student Advising session
  • New Student Advising allows you to meet with an academic advisor, receive pertinent information, register for classes and much more.
  • Please contact Advising and Counseling to register for New Student Advising at either the Macon Cove (901-333-4594) or Union Avenue (901-333-5122) Campus.

Pay Fees: Pay all of your tuition fees, or ensure that your financial aid is in place that covers the full tuition for your courses.

Southwest Identification (ID) Cards: Have your required Student ID made.
  • Photo identification cards are required of all Southwest student.
  • Your ID is required to borrowing books from the library and sell textbooks back to the Bookstore.
  • IDs may be obtained from the Student Activities and Multicultural Affairs office at the Macon Cove (Farris, Room 1101) or Union Avenue (B Building, Room 106) Campuses.
Parking Decal: Obtain a required Parking Decal.
  • Currently enrolled students who park on campus are required to have a parking decal.
  • Decals are valid for one academic year and obtained from the office of Police Services/Public Safety.

Textbooks: Remember to use your class schedule/syllabus as a reference to ensure the correct textbook is obtained prior to attending the first day of class. Textbooks can be purchased:

  • at the time of online registration via BookNow.
  • at the Macon Cove or Union Avenue Campus Bookstores.
    • During the first week of class, temporary bookstores will be set up at the Gill, Maxine A. Smith, Millington and Whitehaven Centers.
  • using the bookstores online efollett.com (http://www.efollett.com/) website.
