Tutoring at the Academic Support Center (ASC)

The Academic Support Center is pleased to announce that our Macon Cove Campus location has moved to the Bornblum Library.

Tutoring is available to all currently enrolled students at Southwest. There is no charge for this service. Content area tutoring is available in most of the core curriculum courses in English and Mathematics, as well as Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Physics, and Spanish. The Academic Support Center (ASC) supports the college's mission by providing academic assistance and enrichment for all Southwest students through the use of technology, tutoring, and other educational resources.

The ASC provides services and resources to help Southwest students successfully reach their academic and career goals. These include tutoring, resources, computer labs, workshops and study areas at numerous locations.

College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA)-International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC)

The ASC's tutor training program is awarded master peer tutor certification through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA)-International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) (opens new window).

In-Person Tutoring

In-person tutoring allows a student to meet with a tutor one-on-one, but group tutoring is also available.

How Can You Schedule An Appointment?

Our schedule is available online. You can view and make your own appointments!

You can make a maximum of two (2) 30 minute appointments per single day (or 1 hour in a single day) and a maximum of six (6) 30 minute appointments per week (or 3 hours in a given week). If you need to cancel an appointment, we ask that you do so as far in advance as you can — at least 24 hours before the appointment if possible – so that your time slot will be made available for other students.

Professional tutors are available at all ASC locations. Some locations also have peer tutors.

Remember: Please bring all needed study materials to your appointment, such as textbook, class notes, assignment sheets, and syllabi.

How To Receive Drop-In (Walk-In) Tutoring?

Our schedule is available online. You can view and make your own appointments!

If you are near an ASC location and want to drop in and see if a tutor is available, please do so to check availability for tutoring. Additionally you may view the tutoring schedule by using the "View Tutoring Schedule" button shown below.

Professional tutors are available on a walk-in first-come, first-serve basis. They are available at all ASC locations. Some locations also have peer tutors.

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is available from Smarthinking, which is accessed in PAWS, as well as Online Tutoring Resources.

Online tutoring services from Smarthinking, allows students to receive real-time tutoring, individual instruction and support from expert online tutors up to 24 hours a day.

Online Tutoring Resources

Online tutoring resources are currently available for courses in Math, as well as Writing, Literature, Reading, or Spanish. This service provides students an additional avenue for tutoring resources in an online setting. You may submit a question or writing assignment for feedback. A tutor will respond to all online submissions within 24-48 hours.

In order to receive online tutoring resources, students must complete the following steps.

Step 1: Sign into PAWS (opens new window) and select one of your courses.

Step 2: In the upper-right corner, under "Self-Registration Courses," select the blue "self-register" link and wait for the next Web page to load.

Step 3: When the Web page loads, select one or both of the following to be enrolled in online tutoring resources.

  • ASC Math Workshop
  • ASC Writing, Literature, Reading, or Spanish Online Tutoring

Step 4: You are now able to receive online tutoring resources.

ASC Resources, Computer Labs and Workshops

Resources such as textbooks and computer labs are provided by the ASC. Workshops may also be offered.

Resources and Computer Labs

Resources such as Wi-Fi networking, open academic computer labs with both PCs and Macs, and disability compliant study areas are available.

Availability of instructional resources may vary among locations. The materials include instructional videos, study guides, most current textbooks, student solutions manuals, and content area handouts on specific topics.

Students can work on computer assignments and projects. Students taking online classes can Log In to their courses from our labs. Computer assistance is available if needed. Tutorial software covering basic skills in Writing, Reading, and Math is available for students. All computers have Internet access and are equipped with printers. Labs contain Microsoft Office application software. Copiers are available for student use for 10 cents per page.

Workshops

Southwest appreciates the support Southwest students need in advancing their academic and career goals. The ASC in cooperation with Southwest faculty members can help provide workshops, open to all currently-enrolled students, to address topics that will ensure every Southwest student can be successful. From course-specific content to study skills and strategies, these workshops will support students in becoming confident, successful, and independent learners.
