STCC Sets 5K Run/Walk; Big Dogs On The Move is Scholarship Fund-raiser

Southwest Tennessee Community College will host the Sixth Annual Saluqi 5K Run/Walk at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, on the Union Avenue Campus, 737 Union Avenue. Big Dogs On The Move is the event's theme. This run down historic Beale Street is sanctioned by the Memphis Runners Track Club. The early registration fee is $12.00. Registration on the day of the event is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. in the Jess H. Parrish Library /Administration Building, Conference Room 100. Participants registering on the day of the race will pay $15.00. All proceeds will be donated to the Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation Scholarship Fund. 

The course for this scholarship fund-raiser begins at the Union Avenue Campus Pedestrian Mall, Beale Street between Myrtle and Manassas. It winds through downtown Memphis to Front Street and returns to Beale and Myrtle. Patsy Anderson is the chair of the 2001 Saluqi 5K Run/Walk. She noted that the race is open to all individuals ranging from nine years old to 70 years and above. Anderson added that the event offers participants a good old-fashioned fun-run and an opportunity to contribute to scholarship funds for deserving area residents.

The award categories are: Overall Male and Female and Overall Masters (over 40-male and female). Age Group Awards -- Male and Female ages 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70+. Trophies will be awarded to all first place winners. Medallions will be given to second and third place finishers.

The serious runners in this exciting race down Beale Street will have the challenge of beating the record pace set in 1998. Joe Coffelt established an overall course record for men with a time of 15 minutes and 50 seconds. Brenda Walton set a new overall course time for women in her 18 minutes and 12 seconds finish.
