STCC's Sails Signs Eight Recruits for Men's Basketball Team

Verties Sails, men's head basketball coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College, announced today that eight student athletes have accepted scholarships to play for the Saluqis next season. Coach Sails noted that this year's recruiting class has the size and quickness that he was looking for in his recruits.

The Saluqis finished the 2000-2001 campaign with a 23-8 record, and made their second consecutive trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship Tournament. Coach Sails is counting on his recruits to help the Saluqis obtain another banner season.

The recruits are: Antwon Bess, 6-4 guard, Hamilton High School in Memphis; Kenneth Bohanna, 6-6 forward, Overton High School in Memphis; Zachary Bright, 6-6 center, Kingsbury High School in Memphis; Marcus Hill, 6-0 guard, Central High School in Memphis; Kater Jones, Jr., 6-0 guard, Central High School in Memphis; Sidiky Kone, 6-9 center, Transfer from the University of North Carolina Charlotte; Jarmorrow Moragne, 6-4 guard, Pine Bluff, Arkansas High School; and Londrick Nolen, 6-6 forward, Raleigh-Egypt High School in Memphis.

Bess, Antwon 6-4 Guard Hamilton High - Coach Ted Anderson

* All City, All State, Finalist for the Best of Preps in basketball.

* Coach Anderson says: "In all the long line of great Hamilton players, he is one of the most athletic that we have had."

* Averaged 19.0 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks per game.

Bohanna, Kenneth 6-6 Forward Overton High - Coach Wayne Hawkins

* Another fine athlete who can run, jump and block shots. Averaged nearly a double double in points and rebounds.

Bright, Zachary 6-7 Center Kingsbury High

* A big, strong athlete who sat out several years. A physical rebounder and inside scorer. Will make us tougher and meaner inside. Played football and basketball at Kingsbury.

Hill, Marcus 6-0 Guard Central High - Coach Roy Spears

* A sleeper athlete from this year's graduating class of the Memphis City High Schools. Great speed, quickness and defensive intensity. A big time talent!

* Averaged 26.3 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game.

* Coach Spears says: "Marcus is a big time talent right now who will get even better."

Jones, Kater, Jr. 6-0 Guard Central High - Coach Roy Spears

* Just now beginning to show his talent. Good quickness and speed. Will play a lot of basketball before he leaves Southwest Tennessee Community College.

* Averaged 12 points, 6 assists and 2.0 steals for Coach Spears.

Kone, Sidiky 6-9 Center Senegal, Africa

* A transfer from North Carolina Charlotte.

* Good rebounder, shot blocker and runner.

* Ready to resume his college career.

Moragne, Jarmorrow 6-4 Guard Pine Bluff, AR High - Coach Ron Moragne

* All Conference and All State. Played for his dad at Pine Bluff High School.

* Averaged 18.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game. Shot 80% from the free throw line and 43% from the field.

* A fine all-around player who can play 1,2 or 3. Will be a great on the ball defender and a fine outside threat.

Nolen, Londrick 6-6 Forward Raleigh-Egypt High - Coach Jimmy Adams

* Averaged 11 points and 3 rebounds per game. A late bloomer who is just now beginning to play the game at a high level.

* Coach Adams says: "Lonnie will be at the Lou Wright - Melvin Coleman level before he is finished."
