STCC's International Students to Host International Fair;
Organizers Feel Current Events Give Fair a Special Significance
The International Student Club (ISC) at Southwest Tennessee Community College will sponsor its Annual International Fair from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., Thursday, November 15. This cultural outreach event will be held on the Macon Cove Campus, 5983 Macon Cove, in the first-floor hallway of the Farris Building.
Congress has mandated that November 12-18 be observed as International Education Week in the United States. The International Fair is part of STCC's observance of International Education Week. It is free and open to the public.
Debbie Hunt, Associate Professor of Developmental Studies and International Student Coordinator at STCC, said due to current events, organizers feel this year's ISC International Fair has a special significance. "Considering the events of September 11, and the ensuing military conflict in the Middle East, STCC's International Fair organizers feel that celebrating the diversity of our College is an appropriate means of demonstrating tolerance and understanding," Hunt said. "Students originating from 83 different countries attend STCC. Many of them live and work in the Greater Memphis area."
ISC's International Fair is designed to celebrate diversity. It will feature food, music, maps, flags, souvenirs, costumes, and cultural and language information. In addition, some of the 83 countries that the College's international students represent will be showcased. Countries scheduled to be represented include Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Mexico, Japan, Cameroon, Sri Lanka, Chile, Germany, Malta, and the United States.
Hunt said the event is also aimed at spotlighting the ISC. "This is a great opportunity for our students and members of the community to learn about the cultures of the world and to make new friends," she said. "I am encouraging all students, both international and American, to join the ISC."
One of the culinary highlights at this celebration of international cultural diversity will be a cooking demonstration by a sushi chef from Sekisui Restaurant. The chef will pass out samples of sushi made on site. There also will be a variety of international foods available for tasting in the cafeteria dining room.
Latino dancing and music will highlight the entertainment. Performers will dance the Marenge, Salsa and other dances that originated in South America.
