A Chance To Dance Set at Southwest
Dance Works, Inc., a classical ballet company located on the Union Avenue
campus of Southwest Tennessee Community College, will conduct its Chance
To Dance Summer Program Monday through Friday, July 8 – August 2. Classes
will be held at 737 Union Avenue, Verties Sails Building, Room 210 -F.
The junior program for ages 7- 13, will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from
8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The senior program for ages 10-18, with previous
experience or permission of the director, will be on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Karen Zissoff, executive/artistic director for Dance Works, Inc., said, “A
Chance To Dance is aimed at introducing youth to the arts.” The program is
sponsored in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Greater Memphis
Arts Council, and the Alcoa Foundation.
This annual intensive educational summer program will feature the
expertise of guest instructors, Judith Davies, a resident of Ottawa,
Canada, and Nancy Ammerman of Nashville, Tennessee.
Local instructors, Milanda McGuinnis, Sandra Baldwin and Kim Stewart, will
conduct sessions on creative, modern and classical dance. The classes also
will showcase the musical talents of Blair Seymour, Lee Ann Jones, Matthew
Sutton, and Darryl Washington.
Dance Works, Inc., is housed in Southwest’s Fine Arts, Languages and
Literature Department. Founded in 1987 by Zissoff, the classical ballet
company offers dance instructions for both females and males. This unique
curriculum targets students ages 4 to 18. It has a broad ballet base and
includes creative and contemporary dance as well as Pointe, Character and
