July 14, 2004 For More Information, Contact: Keith Gentry (901) 333-4114 -- Kimberly Stark (901) 333-4023 AKIN SIGNS WITH SALUQIS’ BASEBALL TEAM Matt Akin, who helped lead Munford High School to the Class AAA state tournament the past three seasons, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and baseball career at Southwest. “Matt is a very talented player,” said Southwest head coach Johnny Ray. “He has enjoyed great success at Munford and I expect his ability to carry over to college. We are excited to have a person of his character and ability in our program. He will represent us well on and off the field.” As a senior, Akin batted .340 with 10 doubles, four home runs, 21 runs batted in, and a .500 on-base average. He was a four-year starter as an infielder for Munford coach Tommy Densford, and was named to the All-District 14AAA Team and All-Tournament Team his senior year. In 2004, Munford finished the season with an outstanding 26-7 record, winning the District 14AAA and Region 7AAA championships before losing to eventual state champion Knoxville Farragut in the state tournament semifinals. |
