The Gill Center at Southwest Tennessee Community College is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of its inception on Friday, April 2. Senators and Representatives from the state of Tennessee along with other dignitaries from Shelby county, and the Memphis metropolitan area will be on hand for the celebration. The ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gill Center, 3833 Mountain Terrace.

Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Senator James F. Kyle, Jr. from District 28. Plaque presentations will be made by Representative Steve I. Cohen, District 30. In addition, a Freedom Shrine Dedication will be held at the Center in conjunction with the Exchange Club. Tours of the center will be available and refreshments will be served.

The Gill Center was dedicated in September 1983 as the Elbert T. Gill, Jr. Campus. Dr. Gill, a prominent businessman in the Frayser community and a member of the legislature, was instrumental in helping gain access to the campus for Southwest. “I was in the legislature at the time, and we saw a need for a junior college in the area,” states Gill. “With all the public and private schools close by it was necessary to have a campus where we could supply education to everyone in the community, and a place like this (Gill Center) is a good way to start your education.”

The property has 33.6 acres, a main building with 14 classrooms, a biology lab, a state of the art library, a new computer lab, a gym, and a baseball field. For more information on the Gill Center please visit
