SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS OPEN SEASON WITH ALUMNI GAME
Release written by Keith Gentry

The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams will open the 2004-2005 season against the Saluqi Alumni on Friday, October 29 in the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union Avenue Campus. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. The games will feature this year’s squads against teams composed of former Saluqis and Lady Saluqis. Tickets are $5 for adults (including students) and $2 for children under 12.

“We’re using these games as a fundraiser for the Verties Sails Gymnasium Renovation project,” said Southwest head men’s basketball coach and athletic director Verties Sails Jr. “We’d like to see all alumni and friends at the games to not only help us raise funds for our gym renovation, but also to see (what should be) two outstanding basketball games.”

Coaching the Saluqi alumni will be Curtis Hollowell, who played for the Saluqis from 1981-1983 and is the school’s all-time assists leader, and McKinley Singleton, a two-time West Division Player of the Year (1980 and 1981) who was inducted into the Saluqis Hall of Fame in 2003. Top players for the men’s alumni will be John Grice, a two-time All-American (1998 and 1999) for the Saluqis who recently played with the San Antonio Spurs Summer League team, Lorico Duncan (first team All-American in1998), and Marlon Walls (TJCCAA Player of the Year in 2001).

The women’s alumni team will feature four former junior college All-Americans: Priscilla Gary, the first Lady Saluqis’ All-American in 1981 and who was inducted into the Saluqis Hall of Fame in 2003, Glynetha Davis (second team All-American in 1987), Myquita Mackey (first team All-American in 1999), and Amie Williams (first team All-American in 2001).

The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis open the 2004-2005 regular season on Monday, November 1 against Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The first home games for Southwest will be on Saturday, November 6 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium when the Lady Saluqis will host Carl Albert State College at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game against Kennedy-King College at 7:30 p.m.
