The Southwest baseball team participated in the Worth Junior College Showcase in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on Saturday, September 25, defeating Volunteer State (6-3) and tying Walters State (6-6).

Against Vol State, winning pitcher Taylor Bennett pitched three shutout innings, striking out four batters. Collins Coltharp hit a three-run homer in the second inning that gave Southwest a 3-0 lead. Other top hitters for the Saluqis were Brendan Murphy (2 hits), Wes Melton (double), and Chris Rogers (double, RBI on sacrifice fly.)

In the Walters State game, the Saluqis fought back from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-all on Dustin Turner’s RBI single. Top hitters for Southwest were Brett Jenne (triple, RBI), and Clay Wright (double). Starting pitcher Jason Adams pitched three innings, allowing no runs.

The Saluqis’ next game will be Tuesday, September 28, when Southwest takes on Northwest Mississippi in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Senatobia, Mississippi. On Thursday, September 30, Southwest will host Crichton College in a 3:30 p.m. single game at Gagliano Field. The Saluqis travel to Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi on Friday, October 1, playing Bevill State-Fayette at 3 p.m., followed by Mississippi Delta at 6 p.m.
