LADY SALUQIS SOFTBALL TEAM DEFEATS MOTLOW STATE

The Southwest softball team opened the 2004 Fall Season over the weekend, competing in the CSCC Fall Classic in Columbia, Tennessee. The Lady Saluqis lone win was a 2-1 victory over Motlow State Community College, last year’s Region VII runner-up. Southwest played a total of five games, losing to Volunteer State Community College, Cumberland University, and John A. Logan College, and Motlow State.

The Lady Saluqis opened the Classic on Friday afternoon against Volunteer State, last year’s Western Division champion in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. Southwest took a 1-0 lead when Chrissy Odom singled to lead off the second inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ginny Galloway, then later scored on an error. Vol State went ahead 2-1 in the third and ended up winning the game by a final score of 7-1.

In the second game on Friday, Southwest played Cumberland University and was defeated by a score of 3-0. The Lady Saluqis had only two hits in the game, one of which was a double by Erin Cook. On Saturday morning, Southwest was defeated 10-1 by John A. Logan College (IL) before defeating Motlow State in the second game of the day.

In the win over Motlow, the Lady Saluqis scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning. Melissa Perry led off with a bunt single, followed by a walk by Jessica Brinson, then both scored runs. Perry scored the game’s first run on a single by Tiffany Bright, then Brinson scored on a ground ball by Chrissy Odom. Erica Brich pitched an outstanding game, allowing only four hits and striking out three.

The Lady Saluqis were scheduled to play Bethel College in the third and final game of the day, but played Motlow State again when Bethel failed to show. Southwest fell behind 8-0, then scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the final score 8-7.

Southwest returns to action on Tuesday, September 14 against Lambuth University. The doubleheader will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Appling Complex in Bartlett. On Thursday, September 16, the Lady Saluqis will scrimmage at Rhodes College at 3:30 p.m.
