SALUQI MEN DEFEAT VOL STATE FOR TENTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Southwest men’s basketball team won its tenth straight game on
Saturday afternoon, defeating Volunteer State 83-78 in Gallatin,
Tennessee. The win improved the Saluqis’ record to 17-5 overall and 11-2
in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. With
three games remaining on the schedule, the Southwest men are currently
in first place in the West Division of the TJCCAA.
Five players scored in double figures for the Saluqis, led by Chris
Prince with 14 points. Other top scorers were A.J. Pigram (11), Dee
Burchett (10), Lester Hudson (10), and Jeremy Marrs (10). Prince and
Burchett tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven each, and
Burchett also led the team with six assists and four steals. As a team,
the Saluqis out-rebounded Vol State by a 49-36 margin, forced 23
turnovers, and had 14 steals.
The Lady Saluqis dropped a 71-66 decision to Vol State, their second
loss in the last three games after winning eight in a row. The Southwest
women’s record now stands at 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the TJCCAA. Against
Vol State, top scorers were Ashley Mason with 18 points and Kenya Moore
and Imesia Jackson with 13 points apiece. Shayna Troupe was the top
rebounder with 11 boards.
The Southwest basketball teams return to the Verties Sails Gymnasium on
Thursday, February 10, when they host Jackson State in the Homecoming
Game. Game times are 6 p.m. for the women’s game, followed by the men at
8 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on WUMR FM 91.7.
