Dance Works Residency Will Include Master Classes and Outreach
Through a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, Dr. Mel A.
Tomlinson, will be working with students at Dance Works January 25-29.
Master Classes will be held in ballet, creative and choreography. A
three-day outreach program will be held at Alonzo Locke Elementary
School.
Dance Works is in its 11th year on the Union Avenue Campus of Southwest
Tennessee Community College. Dance Works incorporates all segments of
the Memphis community in its dance program that encompasses such dance
forms as ballet, modern, jazz and African. Its students range in age
from 4 to 22, and the program offers scholarships to interested students
with financial need.
Tomlinson, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, is a former principal
dancer with Agnes DeMille’s Heritage Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theatre, New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, and
North Carolina Dance Theatre. His repertoire includes works that range
from contemporary to classical ballet.
