SALUQI MEN CONTINUE WINNING STREAK WITH WIN OVER COLUMBIA STATE

The Southwest men’s basketball team won its eighth straight game on
Saturday afternoon at the Verties Sails Gymnasium, defeating Columbia
State 117-88. The win improved the Saluqis’ record to 15-5 overall and
9-2 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.
The Southwest women dropped an 83-79 decision to Columbia State, ending
an eight-game winning streak. The Lady Saluqis record fell to 14-6
overall and 7-4 in the conference. Both Southwest basketball teams are
currently in first place in the Western Division of the TJCCAA.
Rasuul Buluu scored 26 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and dished out four
assists to lead the Saluqis to the victory. Several other Southwest
players had big games, including Dee Burchett, who scored 22 points and
had five steals, and A.J. Pigram, who scored 17 points and had a
season-high eight steals. Also in double figures for the Saluqis were
Lester Hudson (14), Nick Covington (11), and Moraye Ivy (11).
In the women’s game, Southwest placed four players in double figures,
led by Lakeisha Jackson’s 19 points. Jackson made four three-point field
goals and also grabbed five rebounds. Other top scorers were Kenya Moore
(13), Imesia Jackson (12), and Porshia Willis (10). Willis also led the
Lady Saluqis with eight assists and six steals.
Southwest returns to the court on Tuesday, February 1 at Dyersburg State
Community College in Dyersburg, Tennessee. The women’s game will begin
at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m. Both games will be broadcast
locally on WUMR 91.7 FM. On Saturday, February 5, the Saluqis and Lady
Saluqis travel to Gallatin, Tennessee to take on Volunteer State
Community College. Game times on Saturday will be 2 p.m. (women) and 4
p.m. (men).
The next home game will be on Thursday, February 10, when Southwest
hosts Jackson State Community College in this year’s Homecoming Game.
