SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL TEAM DEFEATS EAST MISSISSIPPI

Southwest scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to
defeat East Mississippi 9-8 in the second game of a softball
doubleheader on Thursday, September 7 at the Buckhead Creek Recreation
Complex. The win gave the Lady Saluqis a split after losing the first
game 5-2.
In a contest that was close throughout, Southwest entered the last
inning of game two down by a score of 8-6. With one out, freshman
Rebecca Allen singled to center then freshmen Danielle Cook and Brooke
Hively both reached base on errors, scoring Allen with the Lady Saluqis
seventh run. Sophomore Jessica Hefflinger grounded into a fielders
choice and advanced to second on the throw, advancing Hively to third.
With two outs, sophomore Carrie Byram then singled to center, scoring
Hively and Hefflinger with the tying and winning runs.
The winning pitcher was freshman Staci Craig, who allowed only two
earned runs and struck out 11 batters. The first game starter, sophomore
Caryn Hubbard, was also impressive allowing only two hits while striking
out five in 4-1/3 innings. Top hitters on the day for the Lady Saluqis
were Byram (4 hits, double, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored), sophomore Lindsey
McGoff (4 hits, 4 RBI), freshman Alyse Brewer (3 hits, double, 2 runs
scored), and sophomore Anna Carter (2 hits, 2 RBI).
