Southwest Names Stephanie Stephens Director of Physical Plant

Stephanie R. Stephens has been named director of the physical plant at Southwest Tennessee Community College. She most recently was associate director of administration at ALSAC-St. Jude with responsibility for the gift planning department, following on completion of the hospital's Children's Cancer Research Facility for which she was the project manager.

"Her wide-ranging experience, coupled with a talent for 'multi-tasking,' makes her very valuable to our program," said Ronald Parr, vice president for Financial and Administrative Services. "Her hands-on experience, from full scale construction oversight to the 'small stuff,' gives her the knowledge and skills to handle any project."

With construction supervision for three major buildings currently under way at different stages of completion, and maintenance responsibility for two main campuses and multiple centers, Stephens has her major projects pretty well lined up for the near future. In addition to oversight of construction and maintenance, Stephens has instituted a cross-training program to maximize skills of personnel throughout the various departments she supervises.

"When the construction that's under way is complete, we know maintenance workloads will increase. Today's economy is likely to stay around for quite a while, making any new hiring unlikely. So it makes sense to train the people we have in multiple skills to take care of what's coming," said Stephens.

Stephens earned her Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Christian Brothers University, and her first work experience was with Weyerhaeuser Paper Company where responsibilities included project scope, cost control, design, construction and implementation for all departments. She also worked as engineering technician for the City of Longview in Washington state, a "planned city," before moving on to St. Jude. Her membership in professional organizations includes the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, the Steel Structures Painting Council and the American Society of Healthcare Engineers.
