John Farris, the former president of the Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation Board of Trustees, has received a noteworthy honor. Farris was appointed to the Tennessee Board of Regents on July 24, 2008, by Governor Phil Bredesen. Farris is the son of former Regent Bill Farris who served 18 years on the Board of Regents from 1978 – 1996.

Farris received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Memphis and graduated in the top 15 percent of his class at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He ranked in the top 10 percent of his class in post-law graduate studies at the University of Florida.

He is a member of the Memphis Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, and the Florida Bar. He is the only Memphis lawyer to be recognized in the Best Lawyers in America – 2008 under Government Relations Law. Farris is a member of the Tennessee Lobbyists Association.

He also served on the Bredesen for Governor Transition Team Advisory Committee (2002) and served as the chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party (1989-1993), a delegate at the Democratic National Convention (1992, 2004), and is a member of the Tennessee Democratic Party (Executive Committee Member 1998 – 2006).

“It is an honor and privilege to have been appointed to the Tennessee Board of Regents by Governor Bredesen,” Farris said regarding the appointment. “Having served on the Foundation Board at Southwest, I have learned a great deal about the higher education system in Tennessee and the impact it has on the lives of Tennesseans. I look forward to learning more about the inner workings of higher education in the state and I hope to play a part in improving the system,” he added.

Farris and his wife, Amy, reside in Memphis and are members of the Christ United Methodist Church.
