Southwest to Hold 2008 Commencement at the Desoto Civic Center

Southwest Tennessee Community College will observe its 2008 Commencement Ceremony on May 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss. Founded in 2000, Southwest is the largest community college in the state governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents system and will award associate degrees and technical certificates to over 870 candidates.

Nontombi Naomi Tutu, daughter of South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is Southwest’s 2008 commencement speaker. Tutu’s professional experience includes work as a development consultant in West Africa and as a program coordinator for race, gender and gender-based violence educational programs at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. She is a highly sought after public speaker – having addressed such groups as business associations, professional conferences, elected officials, and church and civic organizations. In addition, Tutu has taught at the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut and Brevard College in North Carolina.

The student speaker for the commencement ceremony is Joi Ragland. She’s a public administration major who is an honor student and recipient of numerous awards and recognition for her outstanding contributions to campus activities. She is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in America Junior College for outstanding merit and accomplishment. Ragland is also a 2006-07 Dean’s List scholar who received a Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution and Commitment to the Southwest Student Government Association, 2007.
