Fayette County High School Senior Will First Graduate in Southwest's Commencement

Charlie Harrell, Fayette-Ware High School senior, will still be attending high school classes when he marches in the 2008 Commencement Ceremony for Southwest Tennessee Community College on May 3. Harrell participates in the dual enrollment program at Southwest which allows high school students to take college courses concurrent with high school classes. He will be awarded a Technical Certificate in Industrial Computer Fundamentals. Harrell attended Southwest on a Tennessee Valley Authority grant which pays tuition and fees for qualifying high school juniors and seniors earning college credits leading to technical certificates and associate degrees in Engineering Technologies through Southwest's dual enrollment program.

Harrell first came to Southwest through participation in the Bioscience Career Ladder Summer Institute. The Bioscience Career Ladder Summer Institute is one component of a Community Based Job Training grant awarded Southwest by the U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose of the grant, according to Angela Wooten, the grant director, is "To build Southwest's capacity to produce as many graduates as possible in three areas of biosciences. They are the Biotechnology Technician Associate Degree and Engineering Technologies Associate Degree programs and Engineering Technologies Technical Certificate programs."

Marching with Southwest is a big deal for Harrell. " …Considering, I am marching in a college graduation before my high school graduation, this is quite different from what I expected," said Harrell. His high school graduation ceremony is two weeks later.

Southwest will observe its 2008 Commencement Ceremony on May 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi.
