Shelton Appointed to Help Establish New Academic Center in Fayette County

Russell C. Shelton has been appointed executive director of Community and Corporate Relations for Southwest Tennessee Community College, based in Fayette County. As his primary task, he will devote the majority of his time working with Fayette County officials to establish a new academic center in Fayette County. With more than 25 years experience in higher education, Shelton is well qualified, and quite familiar both with the Fayette area and citizens, having served as Director of the Tennessee Technology Center in Whiteville for 10 years.

Shelton formerly served on the Hardeman County Board of Education for 12 years, the Bolivar Zoning and Planning Commission, and currently serves as chairman of the commission on the Council on Occupational Education based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Council is a national educational accrediting agency for more than 500 postsecondary institutions across the nation. He is also a member of the Tennessee State University/University of Tennessee Extension Advisory Council and a member of the Board for the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation based in Tempe, Arizona. Shelton holds a bachelor of science degree from Tennessee State University and a masterís from Middle Tennessee State University.

The proposed academic center will serve students from Fayette and adjacent counties. It will be the primary academic facility in Fayette County for Southwest, but is expected to have course offerings from the University of Memphis, University of Tennessee at Martin, and the Tennessee Technology Center at Whiteville. Southwest is currently working with Mayor Rhea "Skip" Taylor of Fayette County and others to establish a location.
