Southwest Basketball Teams Open Season

The nationally-ranked Southwest Men's Basketball Team (Saluqis) opens the 2008-09 season at 2 p.m. on October 25 with an exhibition game against the Spirit Express at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. The Sporting News recognized the Saluqis as the number 10 team in their National Junior College Athletic Association pre-season rankings.

Head Coach Verties Sails Jr. returns six sophomores off last season's squad, led by post players Jeremy Rodgers (9.4 points and a team-leading 9.6 rebounds per game) and DeAngelo Riley (9.4 points and a team-leading 95 blocked shots.) Also back are guards James Justice (6.0 points, 2.6 assists), Josh Watson (3.6 points, 2.8 assists), Paxton Jackson (3.8 points), and Wendell Simmons (2.6 points).

They are joined by an impressive group of sophomore transfers. Myron Strong (University of San Francisco) and Jeremy Williams (University of Colorado) both started as freshmen at Division 1 universities. A third transfer is Reginald Owens, who was selected all-conference as a freshman at Jackson State Community College.

Coach Andrea Martre's Womenís Basketball Team (Lady Saluqis), winners of 51 of 54 games over the past two seasons, returns four players off last season's 25-1 team. The top returnee is Raquel Brigham, who averaged 8.7 points, led the team with 54 three-point field goals, and was named to the All-Western Division team. Other returnees are part-time starter Shalonda George (2.7 points, 3.6 rebounds), Tiesha Hughes (4.4 points), and Porchia Allen (2.5 points, 3.9 rebounds). Adding experience and leadership to the team are sophomore transfers Janine McDonald (Edinboro University), and Rikki Burton (Olive Harvey College).

The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis will play alumni teams on Tuesday, October 28 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium (Union Avenue Campus) before beginning the regular season October 31 - November 1. The men will play in the Kennedy-King College Tip-Off Classic in Chicago while the women travel to Eunice, Louisiana for the Lady Bengal Classic.
