The Southwest Men's Basketball Team will tune up for the 2009-2010 season with an exhibition game against the Spirit Express at 2 p.m. on October 24 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. It will be the first of two exhibitions for the Saluqis. They will play the Saluqi Alumni on October 31 in their second exhibition game before beginning the regular season November 6-7 at the Kennedy-King Classic in Chicago, Illinois.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Verties Sails, the Saluqis went 27-3 last season, winning the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) Western Division regular season and Region VII tournament championships and finishing eighth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 National Tournament. The Southwest men were also ranked in the NJCAA Poll for much of the 2008-2009 season and finished the regular season with a number four national ranking.
Despite returning only one player off last year's squad (sophomore guard Gregory Stewart), the Saluqis are ranked number 20 in The Sporting News 2009-2010 Pre-Season Poll. However, there are several sophomore transfers on the roster who are also being counted on for leadership this season: 6'7" forward Marshall Bonds (Little Rock, AR Mills High School/Atlanta Metropolitan College), 6'5" guard DeAndre Bynum (White Station High School/Quinnipiac University), 6'3" forward Deveyon "Boo" Hunter (Hamilton High School/Eastern Kentucky University), 6'9" forward/center Nicholas Livisay (Bolton High School/University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff), and 6'0" guard Martin Mitchell (Christian Brothers High School/Henderson State University).
