Hayes Named NJCAA Player of the Week

Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Amber Hayes has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 Softball Player of the Week after batting .636 with a 1.591 slugging average in games last week against Crowley’s Ridge, Northeast Mississippi, Roane State, and Walters State.

Hayes, a graduate of Brighton High School who came to Southwest after playing her freshman season at the University of Tennessee-Martin, went 14 for 23 with 11 runs, two doubles, two triples, five home runs, and a walk. She also drove in 12 runs. Hayes has already broken single season school records in many categories, including home runs (11), triples (6), and RBI’s (34). Last week, with both pitchers down with injuries, Hayes stepped up to pitch in seven games, compiling a 3-4 record with a 3.82 earned run average and 21 strikeouts in 36-2/3 innings.
