Southwest Baseball Team To Face Roane State in Region Play-In Game

The Southwest baseball team will take on Roane State in a Tennessee Community College Athletic Association/National Junior College Athletic Association Region VII Tournament Play-In Game at 3 p.m. on May 1 at Dave Hall Field in Columbia, Tennessee. The winner will play nationally-ranked and top-seeded Walters State at 7 p.m. on May 2. The tournament championship game will be played on May 7.

The Saluqis enter the tournament with a 24-25 overall record and are led in hitting by sophomore shortstop Yogi Vanaman with a .401 average, 14 doubles, seven home runs, and 36 RBI. Other regulars in the starting lineup are sophomore outfielders: Matt Ince (.386, 13 doubles, 24 RBI); Bobby Turner (.326, 25 stolen bases); Chris Coleman (.300, 11 doubles; six home runs, 28 RBI); and Nick Ely (.288, 15 stolen bases). Sophomore infielders are Matt Dangar (.307, 11 home runs, 41 RBI) and Jesse Brooks (.306, 13 doubles, 20 RBI). Also starting are sophomore catcher Austin Moody (.270, 17 RBI) and freshman infielder Kyle Lewis (.293, 20 RBI).

Probable starters on the mound are Ince (6-5 record, 4.43 ERA, 67 strikeouts); Lewis (1-2 record, 8.64 ERA, 25 strikeouts); and sophomore Nick Purcell (2-6 record, 6.35 ERA, 64 strikeouts). Top relievers are sophomores Jas Ferguson (2-1 record, 7.63 ERA, 25 strikeouts); Chris Williams (1-1 record, 5.64 ERA, 16 strikeouts); and Nick Pierski (2-1 record, 5.89 ERA, 17 strikeouts).
