Sails Named TCCAA Coach of the Year, Strong Named Player of the Year

Verties Sails Jr., who led the Southwest Men's Basketball Team to a number four national ranking, the Region VII Tournament Championship, and a berth in next week's NJCAA National Tournament, was named Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) Coach of the Year for the 13th time in his 30 years at the college. Sails has guided the Saluqis to a 25-1 record this season, improving his career record to 662-246.

Sophomore guard Myron Strong, who was voted TCCAA Player of the Year, and sophomore forward Reginald Owens were named to the All-TCCAA Team. Strong is averaging 14.5 points per game, leads the team with 35 three-point field goals made and a .815 free throw percentage, and also ranks among team leaders with 82 assists and 62 steals. Owens is averaging 14.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and is one of the Saluqis leaders with a .588 field goal percentage.

In addition to Strong and Owens, sophomores Jeremy Williams, DeAngelo Riley, and James Justice were selected to the TCCAA's All-Western Division Team. Williams is the team's top scorer with a 15.5 average. Riley averages 12.6 points per game and leads the team with 8.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game. Justice adds 10.2 points and 2.3 assists per game off the bench.

Two players on the Southwest Women's Basketball Team, freshman Kiana James and sophomore Raquel Brigham, were named to the All-Western Division Team. James led the team and ranked among conference leaders with 15.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while Brigham averaged 10.4 points per game and led the team with 58 three-point field goals made.
