The Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) at Southwest Tennessee Community College has scheduled two sessions of the recently developed Human Resources Child Care Training-Planning Workshop on December 11. This session follows two earlier sessions completed in November, according to TSBDC Executive Director David Doyle. The training sessions, serving all of Tennessee, were developed at the request of the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) and are now being implemented throughout the state.
"The need for the training cannot be exaggerated," said Doyle, quoting from a letter sent by TDHS licensing supervisor Angeline Vaulx to all child care providers licensed in the state. Doyle quoted three telling points she made:
The purpose of the training is to address hiring practices, retention, staff development, and organizational issues associated with owning and operating a child care facility. The training is free. Participants will receive a certificate for the training hours completed. Individuals completing the four-part series will be offered assistance by the Small Business Development Center to develop strategic plans "related to the course work and aid [child care services] in improving or implementing change in programs" said Vaulx.
The new online training center is available to both start-up and existing businesses and is accessible at the TSBDC website online. Currently, 20 online courses cover topics in accounting, marketing, human resources and business planning, specifically for child care facilities. A few of the courses are available in Spanish, and all will be in the near future. To register for both online and classroom training, visit www.tsbdc.org.
