The tenth-seed Southwest baseball team will play seventh-seed Volunteer State Community College in a Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA)/National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VII Tournament Play-In Game at 10 a.m. on May 7 at Dyersburg State Community College in Dyersburg, Tennessee. The winner will take on second-seed Chattanooga State Community College at 1 p.m. on May 8. The championship game for the double-elimination tournament is scheduled for May 12. The tournament champion will host a best of three series against the Region 17 champion in the East Central District playoffs May 20-22 with the winner advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament May 29-June 5 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Southwest (15-32 overall, 2-20 in the TCCAA) was swept by Volunteer State in a three-game series in Gallatin, Tennessee, on March 19-20 by scores of 5-4, 16-6 and 14-4.
Leading the Saluqis’ offense this season are freshman designated hitter Blake Dixon (.333 batting average, leads team with a .426 on-base average and .494 slugging average), freshman centerfielder Alonzo Powell (leads team with 35 hits and 14 stolen bases), sophomore second baseman Kyle Lewis (leads team with five home runs, 47 total bases and 20 runs scored), and sophomore first baseman Shawn Clarke (leads team with 18 runs batted in).
Probable starting pitchers include sophomore left-hander Tim McCormack (leads team with a 4.96 earned run average, 25 strikeouts), sophomore right-hander Justin Wright (6.08 earned run average, 25 strikeouts), and freshman right-hander Daniel Billingsley (7.91 earned run average, team-high 34 strikeouts).
