The Southwest men's and women's basketball teams, coming off sweeps of conference opponents Cleveland State and Volunteer State to end the regular season, will travel to Dyersburg, Tennessee this week to compete in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament. The tournament championship games will be played on March 6 with winners advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament March 15-19 (men in Hutchinson, Kansas; women in Salina, Kansas).
The Lady Saluqis, who finished the regular season with a 11-12 overall record including 9-9 in the conference, will take on Roane State in a quarterfinal game on March 3 at 4 p.m. Top scorers this season for Coach Andrea Martre's squad are freshman forward Jasmine James (10.6 points per game), sophomore guard Shantel Crout (10.5), freshman Teneshia Lurry (10.0) and sophomore Krystal Riley (9.1). James is also the team's top rebounder with an 8.3 average while Riley leads in assists with 3.8 per game.
Coach Verties Sails' men's team won five of their last six games to finish the regular season 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the conference. Southwest will face Jackson State in a quarterfinal game on March 4 at 8 p.m. The Saluqis are the top scoring team in the conference with an average of 89.3 points per game and feature six players scoring at least eight points per game, led by sophomore guard Joshua Wilkerson (11.0), freshman forward Antwon Oliver (9.8) and sophomore forward Antonio Coleman (9.1). Coleman leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 per game while sophomore point guards Martin Mitchell and Brian Blackmon lead the Saluqis in assists with averages of 3.9 and 3.8 respectively.
