Date: January 18, 2011
For the fourth year, the "smART on Cooper" silent art auction will be held on January 29 at Burke's Bookstore, 936 S. Cooper, to benefit the Southwest Tennessee Community College Honors Academy. The event begins at 7 p.m. and bidding closes at 9:30 p.m.," said Doug Branch, director of the Honors Academy, "and entry to the auction is a $5 donation to the Honors Academy."
Among the artists who have donated works is Paul Edelstein, one of the Mid-South's best-known artists, who was raised in Memphis, where he still lives. His figurative abstract style paintings feature vibrant colors, which he calls his "day obsession." Edelstein's paintings appear in the movies The Firm and 21 Grams. Also represented by her work is photographer Annette Fournet, who also is an assistant professor in Southwest's Languages and Literature Department, where she teaches art. Her work is exhibited at galleries and museums in France, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Kyrgyzstan, Great Britain and the United States.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Honors Academy activities fund and be used for, among other things, the Academy's trip to the Southern Regional Honors Council Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas in February; to fund "Evening at the Theater" in March; sponsorship of a National Poetry Month guest reading in April; the Honors luncheon in May; and at least one "Evening at the Theatre" next fall.
"We'll have a gallery full of paintings, fine photography, and other art media," promised Branch. "And there'll be plenty of refreshments to enjoy as you browse."
