The Southwest men's basketball team will get its first test of the season when the Saluqis take on Spirit Express in an exhibition game October 22 at 2 p.m. at the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union Avenue Campus.
Both the men's and women's teams will play Southwest Alumni teams on October 29 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium in their final pre-season tune-ups. The women will tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Both teams open the 2011-12 regular season at home on November 1 against Mid-South Community College (women 5:30 p.m., men 7:30 p.m.)
Returnees for men's Coach Verties Sails are sophomores Antwon Oliver (Wacine, WI) and Montez Fifer (Southwind High School). Oliver averaged 9.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a freshman and led the Saluqis with a .528 field goal percentage, while Fifer averaged 5.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Also returning after a red-shirt season in 2010-11 is point guard Mario Bass (Kirby High School), who averaged 2.3 points and 2.4 assists and led the team with 1.9 steals per game as a freshman in 2009-10.
Lady Saluqis' Coach Andrea Martre returns three players from last season in sophomores Amber Dunlap (Bolton High School), Erica Ousley (Fairley High School) and Montique McConnell (Mitchell High School). Dunlap, who averaged 6.5 points per game as a freshman, is the top returning scorer and was also second on the team with a .487 field goal percentage. Ousley averaged 5.9 points and 2.0 assists per game while McConnell averaged 2.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists.
