Southwest Tennessee Community College Director of Athletics Verties Sails Jr. has announced the hiring of George Sykes as the Saluqis' new head baseball coach. "We're very pleased to have Coach Sykes aboard," Sails said. "We're looking forward to him doing an outstanding job!"
Sykes comes to Southwest with over 35 years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate and USA national team levels. He was head baseball coach at Messick and Germantown High Schools from 1975-1988, leading his teams to numerous district and regional championships including Germantown's 1981 state title. In addition, more than 50 of his players signed college scholarships during his high school coaching career. Sykes also served USA Baseball in a variety of endeavors which included assisting in bringing the National Training Site to Millington, Tennessee, coaching USA Festival teams, head coach for the USA National Junior Team, and initial director of the USA National 16 and Under Tournament for five years. On the collegiate level, Sykes was assistant coach at the University of Mississippi under Head Coach Don Kessinger from 1990-92. Sykes has also assisted at Christian Brothers High School and most recently Bolton High School.
Sykes was a three-year letterman in baseball, basketball and cross country at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. He signed a baseball scholarship at Jackson State Community College and played two seasons. After receiving his associate's degree from Jackson State, Sykes signed with the University of Tennessee at Martin to continue his education and baseball career. Sykes earned his bachelor's degree in education from UT-Martin then went on to receive two master's degrees from the University of Memphis.
Sykes and his wife, Kandy, reside in Ellendale, Tennessee. They have five children and 14 grandchildren.
