The mission of the Mathematics Department is to provide the mathematical skills required for career and transfer programs, and to prepare students for success in a culturally diverse environment. Additionally, the Mathematics Department's courses also fulfill the general education requirements for all Southwest degree programs.

In Fall 2015, Southwest implemented co-requisite remediation, through which students complete any necessary remediation while enrolled concurrently in college-level courses. Co-req remediation pairs a support course with a college-level course for a semester-long interfacing experience of six credit hours. Co-req remediation replaces former models that delayed entrance into college-level work for one or more semesters.
Co-req remediation is offered in English, Math, and Reading for students whose ACT (or equivalent) scores point to a need for remediation with college-level work. Students enrolled in certificate or degree programs that do not require the Gen. Ed. courses offered through co-req remediation (college-level math or SPCH 1010), but who require remediation, must still clear their deficiencies. They should contact the Math or Languages and Literature departments for questions.
Note: See the Understanding Your COMPASS and ACT Test Scores page for additional information.
