2016-2017 Season Upcoming Shows

An Evening of One Acts (March 29 and 30, 2017)

The phrase that encompasses all the ten minute plays: communication is limited by perspective. The plays are Mrs. Sorken by Christopher Durang, Philadelphia by David Ives, The Man Who Couldn't Dance by Jason Katims, Brother by Mary Gallagher, and The Janitor by August Wilson. The plays deal with domestic relationships from the past and the present in a contemporary setting. They range from comedy to drama.

The Latin Soul - Feel that Latin Soul In You (April 6 and 8, 2017)

Ty Phillips' play focuses on the time when Erika Cortez decides to move to Memphis and leave her beloved town in Latin America. When she arrived in Memphis, she never thought she would find a world so full of soul and rhythm ... all she needs to express the dance within her.

The Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group presents this production of "The Latin Soul" and will offer a free "Salsa Workshop" Friday, April 7, at 12:30 p.m. The workshop will take place on the Union Avenue Campus, B Building, Room 106 (Saluqi Den).

When It Rains (April 21-23 and 28-30, 2017)

This play, written by Levi Frazier, Jr, and directed by Thomas King, is a powerful drama that confronts issues of race, education and family of the 1950's, but are still prevalent today. Set in Memphis, the surprise ending of this play gives meaning to the saying, "When it rains, it pours."

A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich (October 21-23 and 28-30, 2016)

A reader's theater production of Alice Childress' novel, adapted and directed by Associate Professor Evelyn Hall Little, unfolds with the riveting testimonies of a number of concerned and conflicted individuals who are involved in the life of a 13-year-old heroin addict, Benjie.

A Hero will play Friday through Sunday the weekends of October 21-23 and 28-30 at the Union Avenue Campus. Specific information for the preformances can be found in the schedule below.

The Amen Corner (February 17-19 and February 24-26, 2017)

The Amen Corner by James Baldwin and directed by Mary Washington is a play about faith and family, about the gulf between black men and black women and black fathers and black sons. It is a scalding, uplifting, sorrowful and exultant masterpiece of the modern American theater.
