Shelby County District Attorney General Candidates to Address High School Students at Southwest's Criminal Justice Day

Southwest Tennessee Community College will kick off its inaugural "Criminal Justice Day" on April 23 in the Farris Auditorium at the Macon Cove Campus. The purpose of this two-day event is to encourage local high school juniors and seniors to attend college and show them the benefits of majoring in criminal justice. "Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich and Judge Joe Brown from the court reality show, Judge Joe Brown, have agreed to speak along with other law enforcement agencies. Both are running for Shelby County District Attorney General in the August election," said the event's organizer Patricia Nunally, adjunct instructor for the Criminal Justice Program. The candidates are scheduled to speak at 8:30 a.m.

"We will have various criminal justice professionals available to speak to the students, information booths, a meet and greet with the faculty and staff of the Criminal Justice Program, and hands-on activities to include: an intoxication demo, shoe casting, fingerprinting and a possible crime scene," said Nunally.

On the second day of the event, April 28, students will tour the West Tennessee State Maximum Security Prison in Henning, TN. Selected inmates from the prison's "Don't Follow Me Program" will share their stories to encourage the youth not to follow their paths to prison incarceration.
