The Southwest baseball team will travel to Clearwater, Florida this weekend to open the 2015 season at the Winning Inning Tournament. The Saluqis will play the opener on January 30 against Chipola, followed by games against Broward and State College of Florida on January 31 and a single game against Hillsborough on February 1.
Southwest's 2015 Baseball Team
Returning starters for Head Coach George Sykes are first baseman Vince Hoyt, infielder Mason Castile and outfielders Michael Ince and Cade Smith. The top returning hitter is Hoyt, a Blue Mountain College signee who batted .346 with nine doubles, one home run and 19 runs batted in as a freshman. Ince batted .279 as a freshman with three home runs and was second on the team with 24 runs batted in; Smith batted .262 and led the team with 10 doubles. Castile was a part-time starter last season and batted .228 with four doubles. Top returning pitchers include Matt Mills (1-1 record, 16 strikeouts in 28 innings) and Chad Collins (2-3 record, 10 strikeouts in 15-2/3 innings).
