Nichols Voted TCCAA Coach of the Year, Burrell and Rivers Named First Team All-TCCAA

Jerry Nichols, head coach of the TCCAA regular season and Region VII Tournament champion men’s basketball team, was named Coach of the Year in a vote by the conference’s coaches. Three members of the team were named to the All-TCCAA team including two to the first team.

First team all-conference selections for the 28-4 Saluqis were sophomore forwards David Burrell and Jimario Rivers. Burrell, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, led the Saluqis in scoring with a 15.3 average and was the second leading rebounder at 6.4 per game. Rivers, a University of Memphis signee who came to Southwest from Kenwood High School in Clarksville, Tennessee, averaged 13.0 points per game and led the team in rebounding with a 7.2 average. Lorenzen Wright Jr., a sophomore guard from Cordova High School, was voted to the second team as Ronald Whitaker, a sophomore guard from Washington, D.C. A signee of Robert Morris University, Wright averaged 9.7 points per game and was the team’s top three point threat with 84 field goals made from behind the arc. Whitaker was the Saluqis’ top scorer off the bench with an average of 9.2 points per game.
