Phi Theta Kappa students earn top awards at state convention
The Upsilon Delta chapter (UDC) of Phi Theta Kappa is having a phenomenal year. They took home a slew of hardware and certificates at the recent 2018 Tennessee Regional Convention.
UDC President Ronald Morgan was elected 2018-2019 vice president of the West Tennessee Region and four UDC members were published in Tennessee Mosaic, the regional literary anthology for members of Phi Theta Kappa in the Tennessee Region. They were:
- Hammam Alomari, First Place, Creative Nonfiction
- Jonathan Dean, Third Place, Poetry
- Sabrina Washington, Third Place, Short Fiction
- Jaida Culp, Honorable Mention, Poetry
The UDC team of officers placed second in the Distinguished Officer Team competition. Each year, PTK recognizes stellar chapter officers for their ability to plan and budget, schedule and lead meetings, and set and accomplish goals. Southwest’s honored team members were: Joey Brock, Emma Caufield, Jaida Culp, Sabrina Washington, Ronald Morgan, Angela Majors, and Brittany Woods.
UDC also won the Chapter of Light Award in recognition of the chapter’s scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Chapter members submitted 10 activities outside of its rigorous Honors in Action efforts and College Project that were eligible for this award, which was in addition to its recent Five Star Award.
The Five Star Award is PTK’s highest rating for college leadership and active chapter participation in the college community, which includes research into an honors study topic and completion of an Honors in Action (HiA) project. The goal of the Five Star chapter plan is to promote awareness of issues at a campus, local, regional, and global level, all while building leadership skills.
These outstanding accomplishments could not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of UDC Advisors Dr. Joan McGrory and Dr. Twyla Waters. PTK bestowed upon them its prestigious Horizon Award for their tireless efforts and support of the Southwest honor students in their quest to elevate the UDC to Five Star Level and beyond.
Congratulations to the UDC, its members and leaders on their stellar achievements this year. Congratulations also and special thanks to Dr. McGrory and Dr. Waters for their fierce dedication and outstanding contributions to the Southwest honors program.
