KUDOS: Malinda Wade marks final year at helm of Carter G. Woodson Award ceremony
Dozens of students, faculty, staff and visitors enjoyed the life story of a local legend at the 30th Carter G. Woodson Award ceremony earlier this month.
Ruby O’Gray took the audience on a journey through her eclectic life and love affair with theatre. She encouraged the students to pursue their dreams and to never give up. O’Gray was honored for a lauded career in local theatre that has spanned better than 40 years. Southwest’s Levi Frazier presented the award to O’Gray, who was visibly moved by the honor.
The occasion also marked a milestone outside of celebrating the thirtieth year since the award’s founding. Event chair and Associate Professor of Social Behavioral Sciences Malinda Wade is stepping down after 25 years at the helm. Project M.O.S.T. Director Kariem-Abdul Salaam saluted Wade in song while Southwest faculty presented her a bouquet of roses. Fighting back tears, Wade shared how much coordinating the awards program over the years has meant to her. “It has been a pleasure to present this award to some amazing citizens,” she said. “Stepping down from the Honor’s Program frees up my time to work with other programs at Southwest, as well as other civic and community endeavors." Wade says she will continue to work with honor students and mentor fellow faculty throughout the college.
