Forty students were inducted on Nov. 26 into the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) Southwest chapter during a ceremony at the Macon Cove campus. The inductees join an elite group of 365 Southwest students who’ve completed a rigorous five-step leadership program that drives success beyond the classroom and into their phase as professional or student leaders.

The NSLS is a national organization that provides a life-changing leadership program that helps students achieve personal growth and career success and empowers them to have a positive impact in their community. With 869 chapters, the NSLS currently has more than 2.1 million members.

Phoenix Worthy, chapter advisor, and Alma Rutledge, dean of students, recognized each inductee for their hard work and determination. Worthy noted that 23 scholarships for membership were granted this year.

“Becoming a member is just the first step,” said inductee Rodderic Hill as he addressed fellow NSLS members. “What each of you have done is not easy,” Worthy said. “Kudos to all inductees.”

“Becoming a member is just the first step,” said inductee Rodderic Hill as he addressed fellow NSLS members. “This program has enabled us to engage in reflection and to achieve goals as we become student leaders.”

Defining what makes a leader is the question posed to inductees by Dr. Brad Cliff, department head of social and behavioral sciences. During his keynote address, Cliff stressed the influence and impact leaders have on others.

“It’s a ripple effect,” he said. “This is your invitation to create change. Remember, there is not one right way to lead. Leadership isn’t about being the best. It’s about bettering others. So as a leader, create ripples that have an impact.”

The Southwest NSLS Chapter presented Cliff with an honorary membership award and recognized Patsy Fancher, head of the communications, arts and graphics department, with an Excellence in Teaching award.
