Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Economic Impact on the Mid-South Region Reaches Record High at $507.3 Million Annually

Southwest Tennessee Community College is proud to announce its substantial economic impact on the Mid-South region, as the latest analysis reveals that the College contributes significantly to both the local economy and workforce development. 

According to a new economic impact study, Southwest generates $507.3 million in total economic activity annually, positioning it as one of the region’s key drivers of growth and prosperity.

The report (available online: https://southwest.tn.edu/economic-impact.php), was conducted by Lightcast, an independent research firm and shows that Southwest’s operations, student spending, and alumni achievements combined create substantial value for the region. This economic footprint includes direct spending by the College, as well as the long-term benefits provided by the education and training that Southwest delivers to thousands of students each year.

Key Highlights of the Economic Impact Study:

  • Total Economic Contribution: Southwest generates $507.3 million annually in economic activity for the Mid-South region.
  • Job Creation: The College supports over 9,000 jobs in the region, both directly and indirectly, through its operations and the spending of students and alumni.
  • Increased Lifetime Earnings: Graduates experience significantly higher earning potential, with the average graduate earning approximately $1.2 million more over their lifetime compared to those with only a high school diploma.
  • Return on Investment for Taxpayers: Tennessee taxpayers receive a return of $6.90 in added tax revenue and public sector savings due to reduced social costs for every dollar invested in Southwest.
  • Workforce Development: As a vital player in workforce training and development, Southwest serves over 12,000 students annually, with programs that equip graduates with skills needed for high-demand industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, technology, and business.
