Saluqi Corner: Saluqi Basketball enters 2019 among top-ranked TCCAA teams
The Saluqi men and women are off to a promising start this season. The Saluqis are 7-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play, placing them second in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) conference. They are led by Cedric Henderson Jr. who ranks 3rd in the conference with 18.2 points per game, 10th in steals with 1.9 per game and 7th in three-point shooting percentage at 44.8. Other TCCAA statistical leaders are J'Sebian Brown at No. 4, shooting 83.3 percent from the free throw line, No. 6 with a 45.7 three-point shooting percentage and tied for 10th with 1.9 steals; Anthony Yarbrough at No. 3 in field goal and free-throw shooting percentage with 62.5 percent from the floor and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line; Christian Jones at No. 8 with a 42.9 three-point shooting percentage, and Anthony Whitmore at No. 7 with 1.3 blocked shots per game.
The Lady Saluqis are 7-5 overall and 3-2 in TCCAA conference play, placing them 3rd in the conference. Takya Bennett is the team leader, ranking among the conference's best in scoring with a 16.8 average (2nd), 1.3 blocked shots (8th), 46.5 field goal percentage (9th), 66.7 free throw percentage (9th) and 2.3 steals (10th). Also ranking among the TCCAA leaders are Tamia Curry with 2.3 blocks (3rd) and 8.4 rebounds per game (9th) and Aliyah Foote with 4.3 assists per game (3rd).
Both teams return to the Verties Sails Gymnasium for home games January 18 against Volunteer State (Lady Saluqis play at 5:30 p.m., men at 7:30 p.m.) and January 19 against Motlow State (Lady Saluqis at 2 p.m., men at 4 p.m.).
