Southwest names Sheila Bouie as Dean of Health and Natural Sciences

Dr. Shelia BouieSouthwest has selected Dr. Shelia Bouie as the new dean of Health and Natural Sciences.

Dr. Bouie assumed her role effective June 1, 2022 transitioning from her previous position as interim dean of Health and Natural Sciences that began July 2021. 

“I am deeply honored to be nominated and selected as the new dean,” Dr. Bouie said. “I look forward to further developing our College’s partnerships and expanding our programs to be the hallmark of care for the communities we serve.”

Dr. Bouie came to Memphis, Tenn. in 2013 from her original home in Chicago, Illinois. She joined the Southwest family in 2016 as chair of the Department of Nursing. She has a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Bradley University, a Master of Science in nursing from Governors State University, a master’s in Education with a focus on e-learning from the University of Illinois, and a doctorate in Education in higher education from Benedictine University.

Dr. Bouie has held a number of department chair roles as well as a nursing dean position for various colleges since 2001. She has taught all levels of nursing education programs in both the undergraduate and graduate level. She currently serves as chair of the Board of Nursing for Tennessee and site visitor for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).  Additionally, Dr. Bouie is co-chair of the health ministry for Gospel Temple M.B. Church, a co-chair and member of committees in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and co-chair of community engagement for the Memphis Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club.  

She and her husband, Dr. Mark Bouie, recently celebrated 34 years of marriage and family life that includes raising three adult children and spoiling two “amazing” grandchildren.
