FROM THE PRESIDENT
Virtual Fridays continue through next summer
This summer, we moved all classes and operations online on Fridays to help ease the pain at the gas pump for students and employees. Virtual Fridays were smooth and well received. So much so that when we surveyed employees and students, the results revealed that an overwhelming majority of survey respondents wanted to see Virtual Fridays continue. Three out of four faculty and staff members, along with 67 percent of students, agreed or strongly agreed with continuing Virtual Fridays through the academic year.
Therefore, in response to this significant positive response, we have continued Virtual Fridays through Aug. 11, 2023. During yearlong Virtual Fridays, Southwest locations are closed with the majority of classes and college operations held virtually on Fridays. Campus cafeterias and bookstores are closed. However, child care centers are open Fridays, along with Police Services.
Students who responded to the survey also indicated they need library service to be available on Virtual Fridays. Therefore, campus libraries at Macon Cove and Union Avenue are open 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. In addition, a small number of scheduled classes are held on Macon Cove and Union Avenue campuses Fridays this fall. These classes are Friday-only classes that meet once a week. Instructors in these classes haven informed students of the attendance policy. All other classes scheduled to meet on Fridays are held virtually on Fridays.
Events and activities scheduled on campus on Fridays this fall will be held on campus as scheduled.
We hope this alternate work and class schedule continues to provide relief to Southwest employees and students. The College will evaluate Virtual Fridays throughout the year and make adjustments, as needed. Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey, providing the critical feedback that led to this decision.
Students who have questions or concerns about Virtual Fridays, may visit the Virtual Fridays webpage or contact the Office of Student Affairs at 901-333-5325. Employees who have questions
or concerns should contact an immediate supervisor or the Office of Human Resources
at hr@southwest.tn.edu.
Let’s have a great school year!
