Safety guidelines for responding to an active shooter situation
By Diana Fedinec
Southwest Tennessee Community College is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of faculty, staff and students. While the College has not experienced an active shooter situation, it is important to know how to respond to the threat of an active shooter.
There are three primary ways you can respond to an active shooter situation:
- Run: If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises.
- Hide: If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where an active shooter is less likely to find you.
- Fight: As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate an active shooter.
The Southwest Emergency Response Team (SERT) has developed a training video of an active shooter drill that outlines the steps you should take if confronted with an active shooter situation. Please review the safety video below for more information on responding to an active shooter.
