Project M.O.S.T. hosts “De-Stress” fest during finals
Research has proven that stress levels for college students skyrocket during final exams. Universities have developed innovative techniques to ease students’ anxiety.
Project M.O.S.T. (Men of Southwest Tennessee), a grant-funded program designed to promote the retention and graduation of African-American male students at Southwest, hosted its second annual “De-Stress Fest” Dec. 6 to help students relax and clear their minds during final exam week.
Participants played a variety of games, engaged with fellow students at mindfulness stations and enjoyed the opportunity to fellowship in a calm, relaxed environment. They also had the opportunity to win prizes.
“The De-Stress Fest is lovely, and I feel like I’m at home,” said James Rhyme, a M.O.S.T. member. Fellow member Joe Rosser enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. “I get to relax, play games, and eat good food. The atmosphere is very healthy.”
Playing games and interacting with one another is not only good fun, but also helps stimulate your brain. National Institute for Play Founder Dr. Stuart Brown has studied the power of play on individuals from numerous walks of life. Through his research, he discovered that the lack of play was just as important as other factors in predicting future risky behaviors and that playing together helps individuals rekindle their relationships and explore other forms of emotional intimacy. Brown says that allowing students to participate in activities that reduce stress and bring about joy can impact a student’s creativity, ability to problem solve and enhance relationships. It’s also energizing and helps participants reconnect with their youth.
Project M.O.S.T. Counselor Sherman Robinson says relaxing is simple. “All you have to do is take time out and play.”
Project M.O.S.T. students take time out to relax and de-stress during fall 2019 finals week.
