Southwest crowned best two-year community college in Tennessee College Voter Registration Competition
By Chris Caldwell
Congratulations to Southwest’s Student Government Association (SGA) for winning the 2022 Tennessee College Voter Registration Competition in the category of two-year community college. Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett announced the competitive award Nov. 1, 2022.
SGA President Asia Johnson said the SGA team registered nearly 100 Southwest students through its voter registration campaign drives held during National Voter Registration Month in September. Overall, Hargett said that over 1,000 students registered to vote during the competition statewide.
“It makes me proud as a student leader that I can encourage our student population to go out and vote,” Johnson said. “We worked diligently and strategically to reach students through social media, by hosting a registration breakfast and educating students on how they can engage others to spread the word to vote. The SGA team is really proud of this accomplishment and we will continue to encourage everyone to not take elections for granted and to always vote your voice.”
