In October 2023, Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Medical Lab Technician (MLT) program hosted a day of service learning for the health sciences students from the Medical District High School (MDHS) located on the Union Avenue Campus.

MDHS opened its doors in 2021 and is the only Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) early college high school that provides an opportunity for students to earn a high school diploma and associate degree at the same time. Students can choose to get their degree in allied health or information technology.

During service-learning day, Southwest students from the MLT program gave MDHS students a first-hand look at allied health careers through lab demonstrations in the areas of immunology, microbiology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and chemistry.

MLT Associate Professor Shilpa Desai said service-learning days are a great way for Southwest to give back to the community. “Our MLT students are giving the demonstrations. That’s a unique way we can show a mutual affinity with these high school students. We hope to inspire them to keep moving forward in their pursuit of health sciences careers,” Desai said.
